Position Overview

Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, the Vice President, Tax strategically leads Encore’s corporate tax function in all aspects of the Company’s domestic and international tax, including developing and executing comprehensive tax strategies and managing the resources and systems needed to support them.  Responsible for all tax compliance for the US, Puerto Rico and Canada, including state and local sales & use, property and other indirect taxes.  Direct the preparation of the accounting for income taxes in accordance with ASC 740 and coordination with the Company’s external auditors. This role will also lead and support income tax audits for the Company and serve as the key technical resource related to all facets of income taxes.  

Key Job Responsibilities

Tax Strategy

• Assess and communicate the impact of the company's tax structure, transfer pricing policies, intercompany agreements and areas of risk on proposed changes to the company's operations, structure, or financing.

• Provide active support in the company's strategic decision-making, including due diligence, integration for mergers and acquisitions and other business transactions to ensure that senior leadership's planning takes into account relevant tax considerations.

• Collaborate with a broad range of internal partners, including executive management, treasury, accounting, treasury, legal, human resources and business operation personnel on various arising matters.

• Establish and implement short-term and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.

Compliance and Reporting

• Manage the preparation of the company’s consolidated US and Canadian federal income tax returns and all state, provincial & and local income tax returns.

• Review of tax estimates and payments associated with federal and state income tax, sales & use tax returns, property tax returns as well as other functions as needed.  

• Oversee the examination of tax returns by various governmental agencies and provide guidance and make recommendations to resolve tax audit issues and conclude such audits in a timely manner that is most beneficial to the Company. 

• Direct the income tax provision process, including coordination with third party service providers who may assist in the preparation of the Company’s consolidated quarterly and annual income tax provision in accordance with ASC 740 as well as managing the review of the consolidated income tax provision by the Company’s external auditors. Provide documentation of Uncertain Tax Positions in accordance with ASC 740-10.

• Partner with the regional finance directors of the Company’s international operations, as necessary, to obtain information for US returns and ensure proper intercompany transfer pricing and efficient structuring for movement of cash.  

• Prepare tax forecasts for planning and effective tax rate analysis.  

• Provides internal tax advisory, develops key tax-related policy and drives strategic and tactical initiatives 

• Ensure appropriate internal controls related to tax matters are in place and operating correctly

Research & Expertise

• Serve as in-house expert on all tax related inquiries (including those related to customer facing contracts) and responsibilities.  

• Maintain appropriate knowledge base and share information with team members related to the sales and use and income tax issues to which Encore must adhere.  

• Stay abreast of changes in tax law through research and self-development which may impact the Company and make appropriate changes to reflect those needs within the Tax team.

• Perform technical tax research and tax planning efforts to optimize the company's tax position

Staff Development

• Proactively lead and develop the tax team, crafting a positive environment whereby team members are challenged and motivated.

• Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure to effectively accomplish the Tax department’s goals and objectives. 

• Define and communicate career development paths for team, as well as manage any human resources responsibilities including discipline, coaching, performance appraisals, career discussions and adherence to company policies.  

• Cross-train additional team members as deemed appropriate to meet the needs of the business.

Job Requirements

• BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance or Business required

• CPA required; MST preferred

• 15+ years of experience; combination of public accounting and corporate; 3+ years leading a tax function at mid to large sized business; some public company and international experience preferred

• Direct, hands-on experience with MS Excel and other MS Office tools

• RIA, CCH, Tax Notes, and/or BNA tax research experience

• Familiar with various tax software compliance solutions

• Knowledge of applicable tax laws

• Strong customer service and team orientation

• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience in presenting to senior leadership

• A proven ability to research and communicate complex technical tax issues clearly to non-tax team members and work effectively across functional teams and senior leadership

• Demonstrates keen attention to detail

• Able to prioritize and execute tasks in self-directed environment

• Track record of building and developing high performing teams

Work Environment

Office

Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Working times may include irregular hours and on-call status including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Team members must adhere to appearance guidelines as defined by Encore based in an office environment and when traveling, on an individual venue or a representation of venues in that city or area.

Salary Pay Range: $202,746.00 - $275,961.00

The compensation offered for this role is determined based on the qualifications outlined in the job posting for the specified location. Final compensation is based on a number of factors including location, travel, relevant work experience, or particular skills and expertise. In addition, some positions may be eligible for other compensation such as potential overtime, bonuses or incentives.
